The last time we heard from the real Will.i.am they were all at Mermaids Tavern in London enjoying their usual portion of fresh ale. John asked William how he had attended so many schools with so little formal education.

William finished his answer the following month and it began like this…

My formal education ended when I was 15. I couldn’t go to places like Oxford because I didn’t have blue blood. So I returned to my family to work and provide support to the homestead and family. I was lucky he would say because one of his teachers at school took a shine to him.

He offered me a teaching job at his school to teach Latin to young children. As people converted from Catholic to Protestant, they were not using Latin and would not be able to learn in school because all classes were taught in Latin except for a few that were taught in Greek. He also spent time teaching me new modern English. How it is structured and how many words are used.

This was a big deal as this teacher was an Oxford graduate. He helped me learn the basics of education. We also had a common passion for theatre. He loved theater but could not act because it made him afraid to be on stage. So he turned to playwriting. This he showed William.

He showed her the structure, how the play is written, the flow, the words and how to create your own words.

Remember, he would say, Chaucer’s English was only 200 years ago and the new modern English we were learning was very new and not yet widely used outside of London. There was no formal book for collecting and defining words so it was very easy to make up the words needed to complete a sentence.

Since the Catholic Church was using the Latin language, they would use some of those words and Latin language constructions for tenses, adverbs, pronouns, etc. Then we learned more about this when we visited Italy in 1592 and 93 when the theaters were closed. The structure of plays and how they create their stories. We learn to make more words while learning Italian.

When the theaters reopened in 1594, we were able to use our knowledge to begin writing many more plays, many of which were based on what we had learned in Italy. He also said that Italian theaters and plays were very beautiful and that their theaters had been in use since Roman times.

So he concluded, I hope this helps you understand where I’m coming from. I have limited formal education but am self-taught and fortunate to receive help from other sources. My friends in our company have been my greatest asset in learning. Also my good friends and teachers at Stratford and then in Italy where I learned a lot in 12 short months about language structure and how plays came about and how they were written.

Many of their plays were written long ago and many more recently. But the structure is still the same and very similar to what we do here. So it helped me to do my job better and that is to deliver good plays for the company and our good actors.

So there you have it. William Shakespeare was very busy during what they call the Black Years, where it is not known what he did. He was spending time formulating his skills and improving his language. Not only during that dark period, but also during his stay in London, many things remain undocumented.

He continued to learn the new modern English language through his circle of friends. Even his colleague and sometimes adversary Ben Jonson. He was a very skilled debater and challenged William almost every time. William used those opportunities to learn more from a man with more schooling than himself.
